People can now report animal cruelty like any other crime to Crime Stoppers.

They and BC SPCA are partnering together to help animals who have been neglected.

According to both organizations, animal cruelty is a crime regardless if the victim is a pet, farm animal or a service animal.

Animal cruelty is usually a result of neglect from “unintentional ignorance on the animal owner’s part” or intentional cruelty where individuals purposely cause physical harm or injury to an animal.

“Every year, our Cruelty Investigations Department conducts more than 9,500 animal cruelty investigations,” said Shawn Eccles, senior manager of Cruelty Investigations for BC SPCA.

“Our 30 full-time special provincial constables are trained to carry out these investigations, care for animals in distress and recommend charges to Crown Counsel for the prosecution of those who inflict suffering on animals.”

Eccles adds that information on animal cruelty should be reported to Crime Stoppers.

Linda Annis, executive director of Crime Stoppers in Metro Vancouver, said any anonymous tips about animal cruelty are welcomed.

“Your anonymity is guaranteed, you won’t be called back, you will not be asked to go to court, and you may be eligible for a cash award of up to $5,000,” said Annis.

Information on animal abuse can be reported anonymously online at www.solvecrime.ca or by calling 1-800-222-8477.
