Youth ageing out of foster care face many obstacles, but affording a cellphone doesn’t have to be one of them.

At least, that's an obstacle the TELUS Mobility for Good initiative is trying to help youth in B.C. overcome.

TELUS has partnered with Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada to support young people in their transition out of care in the province by providing free cellphone packages over a two-year period.

The program provides youth with access to a TELUS cellphone plan at $0 per month, which includes unlimited across Canada talk and text and up to 3GB of monthly data usage.

This service is meant to help youth to stay in touch with friends and workers, and access important services and resources, including employment and academic opportunities.

Youth who do not have a phone will even have the option of receiving a smartphone from TELUS.

Any young person between the ages of 19 and 26, who was in permanent or temporary care of the Ministry of Children and Family Development or Delegated Aboriginal Agency as of their 19th birthday (or eligible for the Agreement with Young Adults Program), can apply.

Also, if you’re 26 at the time you apply for the program, you’re still eligible to participate.

You can apply for this program online, but, to confirm your eligibility, you will need to submit a letter from your social worker from Ministry of Child and Family Development or Delegated Aboriginal Agency, or a worker from a youth-serving agency who can officially confirm your care status in British Columbia.

You can attach an electronic copy to your application form.

You can learn more and apply for the TELUS Mobility for Good program on the Children’s Aid Foundation’s website.

At the end of the two-year period, the cost of the plan changes to $35 a month.
