‘Pink in the Rink’ is a popular featured game among teams at all levels of hockey in B.C.

For the Cariboo Cougars, 2019 is a milestone year as the Major Midget club is in its fifth season for the annual contest that raises awareness on cancer research, taking place this Saturday (Oct. 19) at Kin 1 Arena.

To date, the team says they have raised over $10,000 for the Prince George branch of the Canadian Cancer Society and they hope to build on that number this weekend as they take on the Vancouver North East Chiefs.

The Cats are coming off of a two-game sweep of the Valley West Giants in Abbotsford, winning 4-1 on Saturday (Oct. 12) and 6-5 in overtime on Sunday (Oct. 13).

Cariboo is currently on a five-game winning streak and the only game they’ve lost was the season-opener in an extra frame against the Thompson Blazers.

Pink in the Rink starts at 4:30 p.m.

In addition to wearing pink sweaters, laces and tape on the ice, fans will also see a 50/50 jackpot with a minimum guaranteed prize of $1,000.

There will also be a Chuck-a-Puck contest with over $400 in prizes and an autograph session with the players following the game.

Across town, the Prince George Spruce Kings are also hosting a similar game for local fans.

The team’s Cancer Awareness Night this Friday (Oct. 18) at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena when they face-off against the Chilliwack Chiefs.

The Spruce Kings will be wearing specialty jerseys as well, which will be auctioned off later on, and goaltender Jett Alexander continues to raise 25 cents per save for cancer research.

Thus far, he’s accumulated over $165 for the October Saves campaign.
