Cole Moberg the third Prince George Cougar to be loaned to the Spruce Kings

NHL Draft pick joining BCHL on transfer terms until Dec. 20

The Spruce Kings’ blue line just got a little more lethal.

Cole Moberg has been loaned to the junior ‘A’ franchise from the Prince George Cougars as a way to stay sharp on the ice with COVID-19 postponing the 2020-21 WHL season until Jan. 8, 2021.

The 20-year-old defenceman will be the third Cat to wear a crown for the next month after teammates Connor Bowie and Aiden Reeves were added on Oct. 27.

The loan terms for each player will end on Dec. 20.

Moberg is replacing Tanner Main, who suffered a fractured fibula and could miss up to 12 weeks as a result.

Spruce Kings General Manager Mike Hawes is looking forward to seeing his newest transfer in red, white and blue for the next month.

"This helps us fill the vacancy created by Tanner's [Main] absence and adds a veteran, proven player to our team. Cole is a dynamic player who will provide a lot of ability, experience and leadership to the group."

The North Vancouver product was drafted by the Chicago Blackhawks in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft.

In the 2019-20 campaign, Moberg finished second in team scoring with 37 points in 58 games, including 13 goals, before COVID-19 cancelled the rest of the year.

On Oct. 23, the WHL granted temporary player transfers with junior ‘A’, junior ‘B’ and Under-18 teams to help athletes continue their skill development before the January 2021 start.

In working with local health authorities, the league says players are expected to report for training camp after Christmas.

Cougars' players are tentatively scheduled to travel to Prince George on Boxing Day (Dec. 26), followed by an abbreviated training camp and possibly take part in a few exhibition games.

Moberg will join the Spruce Kings for their final exhibition cohort game in Merritt on Saturday (Nov. 21).

The BCHL’s new season is expected to start on Dec. 1.
