Five Prince George volleyball teams will finish in top 12 at B.C. championships

The highest ranking a local school can earn is fifth place

We’re into the final day of competition at B.C. Senior Boys and Girls Volleyball Championships and several Prince George teams could have a good ranking by the end of it.

College Heights, Duchess Park boys and girls, Prince George Secondary and Cedars Christian could not only finish on a winning note, they could also be in the top 10 or 12 rankings of their respective tournament.

The CHSS Cougars are fighting for their initial position in the fifth-sixth place game at the 2019 Senior Boys AA provincials after beating the Breakers of Pacific Academy in straight sets earlier yesterday (Nov. 29).

The number-five seed cap off their championships this morning (Nov. 30) against the team they first faced, Victoria’s Pacific Christian School, in a chance to redeem themselves when they lost to the Pacers in three sets.

Duchess Park, the only other boys team from the northern capital competing at provincials, has a chance to finish the AA tournament in the ninth-10th place match against Langley Fundamental.

The Condors won in three sets over W.L. Seaton of Vernon to advance and try to claim the consolation bracket.

Meanwhile, DPSS’ female squad had a whirlwind of a Friday that included upsetting one of the top-three teams in the B.C. Senior Girls AAA Volleyball Championship.

The number-14 lady-Condors surprised third-seeded South Kamloops in five sets, the first four of which were decided by two points, to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.

However, the hope of bringing home a banner to Duchess Park would be brought to a screeching halt after getting by swept by fifth-seeded Carihi Secondary.

The black and yellow will take a top-eight spot in their 16-team tournament, but must face the Vernon Panthers this afternoon and win if they want to finish as high as fifth.

In the same championship, Prince George Secondary was brought to shock when the school they were supposed to meet in their first consolation game, Charles Hays, didn’t show up.

As a result, the Polars could finish in the top 10 at the 2019 AAA provincials, but they must tackle the sixth-ranked Crofton House Falcons this morning before reaching that peak.

Over in the Kootenays, Cedars Christian got into the win column for the first time yesterday at the Senior Girls A Provincials.

The Eagles were relegated to the consolation side after losing their Round-of-16 match to Immaculata, but bounced back to beat the Ebenezer Auroras of Smithers in three sets.

Cedars will face Duncan Christian and if they win, they’ll play for ninth place tomorrow afternoon.

Kelly Road and D.P. Todd both came out on the losing side twice on Friday, meaning the best either school can finish is 17th at the 20-team Senior Girls AA Provincials.

The Roadrunners and the Trojans could potentially meet each other for that very position depending on what happens this morning in Coldstream when they take on Prince Charles and St. Thomas Aquinas respectively.
