The feeling of lifting your arms in celebration brings relief to any golfer when they’ve been consistent in their career, but never had a chance to come out on top.

Prince George’s Tyler Robertson got to experience that rush for the first time in his collegiate career on the weekend after capturing the Camosun League Invitational in Victoria, B.C.

Conveniently, the 22-year-old plays for Camosun College, who hosted the four-team tournament on their home course of Highlands Pacific and where he’s been playing for the last five years in Chargers’ colours.

Robertson told PrinceGeorgeMatters it’s been an up-and-down journey to get to, what he feels, has been his best year yet.

“I’ve kind of made my way through the ranks of the Camosun Chargers, like most young golfers,” he explained. “I was a red-shirt in my first year and didn’t really play much, played a tournament or two in my second year but didn’t really do much, my third year was really the first full year, but this year, my fifth year, things are finally starting to breakthrough. It's such a positive for me.”

The D.P. Todd Secondary graduate conquered the fairways to a two-round total of 145, individual scores of 75 and 70, earning a three-stroke win over Nolan Richardson (Vancouver Island University) and a six-stroke margin ahead of third-place teammates Alex Cordero and Dylan Green.

When asked part of his game worked best for him in winning the title, Robertson credited his mental game for being as strong as it was despite a few mistakes.

“I have a good buddy of mine whose been my mentor and he’s taken me under his wing [...] It’s such a mental game and it’s a real advantage to have that side as one of your strengths because not a lot of people know how to react when you hit bad shots or when you have a bad round. I felt it was at a really high level; I made a double-bogey in that final round, but I was able to steady the ship and finish with a good score. If my mental game wasn’t at the level it was, then maybe that could’ve gotten to me and would not have won even.”

Robertson is the only fifth-year veteran on the seven-player Camosun College men’s golf team and, in addition to concentrating on studying towards a Bachelor’s of Business Administration, with a degree in Accounting, he’s also assumed a bigger brother role this season, leading and teaching rookies what it takes to win at the second-highest level of college golf in Canada.

“That’s a role I really like to be in,” he said passionately during the interview. “I think the guys on our golf team, you know, they’re quite young and they don’t have the experience like some of the other guys I’ve played with here before. So to be able to fill that role, it has helped me so much and I just want to give it back to the guys now and further their golf career.”

With his first individual college win now in his bag, Robertson is now focused on the next task: winning the PACWEST title and solidifying a spot at the 2019 CCAA National Golf Championships in Quebec next month.

He says he’s confident in his abilities and his team’s determination on the course as they currently sit atop of the conference and sixth in the national rankings.

“Overall, our team is very good ball-strikers. From the number-one player to the number-seven player, we all have very good trails towards the green from the fairway or off the tee. We never put ourselves in too much trouble and I think that’s what really separates us from other schools.”

“I’m feeling really good,” Roberston said when asked how he was feeling going into championship weekend.about his game. “Obviously the job is not done, so hopefully, I can bring the confidence I have from last week into this week and finish the job off.”

The PACWEST Conference Championship takes place at University Golf Club in Vancouver Sept. 27 to 29.

Competing schools including Camosun College, host-Douglas College, Langara College, and Vancouver Island University.
