Today is World Suicide Prevention Day.

The international day is an awareness day observed on Sept. 10 every year to foster worldwide commitment and action to prevent suicide.

It was first observed in 2003, and hosted by the International Association for Suicide Prevention, the World Health Organization, and the World Federation for Mental Health.

In Prince George, the Crisis Prevention Intervention and Information Centre for Northern BC will be screening an award willing documentary in the Canfor Theatre on the UNBC campus tonight at 7:00 p.m.

The Crisis Centre will be playing The S word a documentary about Dese’Rae Stage, a suicide attempt survivor on a mission to find fellow survivors and document their stories of courage, insight, and humour.

Through the film, Stage illustrates that suicide is not an affliction of “the other” but that it affects people of all ages, races, faiths, ethnicities, gender presentations, sexual orientations, professions, and more.

She also created a project called LiveThroughThis.org, which explores life on the other side of suicide through the stories of attempt survivors, in their own words, and the portraits Stage takes of them after they share those stories.

Admission is by donation and all proceeds will go to the Crisis Centre for Northern BC to help take suicide awareness and prevention workshops to all communities across Northern BC.
