Madison Landry continued her hot start to the year last night (Nov. 8) in Langley and led UNBC to their first win of the year in the process by a 70-62 score.

The Timberwolves were at the Langley Events Centre for the first of a two-game weekend series against the Trinity Western University Spartans.

Coming into the contest, both teams had yet to win a game to start the 2019-20 campaign, each sitting at 0-2.

TWU had dropped their first two games in Kamloops to the Thompson Rivers University WolfPack while UNBC lost their first two games at home against the University of Victoria Vikes, including an OT thriller on Nov. 1.

The Spartans opened the game on a tear, taking a 4-0 and then 6-2 lead, the Timberwolves went on a streak of their own with an 11-5 run which gave them a 13-11 lead at the end of the first.

The theme of runs would continue as TWU opened the second with a 9-0 run of their own and held the lead for most of the quarter before Emma vanBruinessen would drop a last-second layup for UNBC to give them a one-point lead (33-32) heading into the half.

Landry finished the first half with 12 points to lead the Timberwolves while Nicole Fransson led the Spartans with 12 points and five boards.

The game would continue to go back and forth but UNBC would add five points straight up push their lead to 57-51 heading into the final frame.

The Timberwolves came out strong with another large run, 10-2 and never took their foot off the gas from there even though the Spartans cut the lead to nine with two minutes left.

With the win, UNBC now sits at 1-2 while TWU sits at 0-3.

The Timberwolves finished with a 49.2 field goal percentage (30/61) while the Spartans finished with 30.7 per cent on the night (23/75).

Both squads go back at it again tonight (Nov. 9) in Langley with tipoff scheduled for 5 p.m.
