A 33-year-old man has been arrested in Prince George after trying to evade police.

Mounties say at approximately 2:30 a.m. this morning (March 13), a front line Prince George RCMP officer observed a vehicle being driven on Strathcona Avenue.

The officer observed a Motor Vehicle Act offence and attempted to pull over the vehicle.

The driver would not stop for police and continued to the western end of the street; the officer then tried to block the vehicle in at the end of the street when the driver rammed the police car.

The driver and passenger were arrested shortly after without incident, according to a news release, and the officer did not report any injuries.

When searching the vehicle, police found bear spray, knivesm and a small amount of what is believed to be fentanyl.

The driver, 33-year-old Michael Daniel Jakins of Penticton, B.C. was found to be subject of a Canada-wide warrant issued out of Vancouver, B.C. for break-and-enter, possession of break-in instruments, and driving while prohibited.

The following charges have been approved against Jakins:

  • Assaulting a peace officer with a weapon
  • Fail to stop for a peace officer
  • Possession of a weapon dangerous to the public peace (two counts)
  • Carry a concealed weapon

Police say Jakins is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court today (March 13).
