Petition vies for Prince George park to be renamed after local Terry Fox fundraiser Jim Terrion

The petition is calling for Community Foundation Park to be renamed Jim Terrion Park

A petition has been started to rename Community Foundation Park, where the statue of Terry Fox resides, in honour of one of the city’s own local heros.

The change.org petition wants to see the downtown park renamed after Jim Terrion who had dedicated his life to raising funds for the Terry Fox foundation.

Since 1991 he has raised over $800,000 towards cancer research and has worked tirelessly to raise awareness for cancer research, all while having a hearing impairment. His goal is to raise $1 million for the foundation.

In 1990, at age 29, Terrion walked across Canada in honour of his hero Terry Fox to raise money and awareness for the deaf and hearing-impaired, specifically to help stage the 12th World Winter Games for the Deaf to be held in Calgary.

Now, 30 years later, Jim is still raising significant amounts of money and awareness for The Terry Fox Foundation. Each year, he personally visits every business and residence in Prince George to collect pledges for the Terry Fox Run.

During this year’s virtual Terry Fox Run, Terrion raised over $9,645.

“Jim is a loved and respected member of the Prince George community and has come to be expected knocking on doors with a big smile and pledge sheet in hand,” reads the petition.

The petition was started by Scott McWalter and has the support of Cariboo-Prince George MP Todd Doherty.

At the time of this publication, the petition to rename the park “Jim Terrion Park’ already has over 200 signatures.
