Player of the Week hat-tip to the Prince George Spruce Kings Captain

Ben Poisson is BCHL’s top performer from final week of league playoffs

For a fourth time this season and the third time in the playoffs, a Prince George Spruce King has been honoured for their play.

This time, it’s the Captain as Ben Poisson is the B.C. Hockey League’s (BCHL) Player of the Week ending on Sunday (April 21) for his efforts in rallying Prince George to its first Fred Page Cup in team history.

The 20-year-old scored the game-winning goals in Games Three and Four, both in Vernon and including one in overtime, allowing his Spruce Kings to sweep a third straight playoff series and finish the Cup run with a record of 16-1.

“We had a game plan and we stuck with it," Poisson told PrinceGeorgeMatters when his team arrived in B.C.'s northern capital with the Fred Page Cup. "We knew exactly what we needed to win and it was good. Everyone was on the same page and it worked out for us. All the returning guys had a chip on their shoulder from losing last year [in the Final] and them wanting to win. I didn’t really get to play much last year because of an injury, and so it was awesome to have that opportunity to wear the ‘C’ and win it all this year.”

He also recorded an assist on his brother Nick’s goal in the early moments of the third period of Game Three.

That got Poisson to 21 points (13 goals, eight assists) in the post-season, which led Prince George and was good enough for third overall among BCHL playoff scoring leaders.

His leadership, with a little help from the Brooks Bandits, also helped Prince George earn a second National Championship appearance in franchise history; the Spruce Kings hosted the tournament at the CN Centre in 2007.

Goaltender Logan Neaton, and defencemen Max Coyle and Layton Ahac were honourable mentions in this addition of Player of the Week as well.

Captain Poisson and his teammates begin the Doyle Cup this weekend in Brooks, Alberta to see who will claim the regional championship trophy.

Tickets are on sale today (April 23) at the Rolling Mix Concrete Arena (RMCA) and via the Spruce Kings website as the team is guaranteed two games in the best-of-seven series.
