Real-time data, faster technology and expanded coverage.

That’s what Rogers Communications is hoping to provide for Prince George residents and businesses as the city becomes the first in northern B.C. to be added to the company’s 5G service.

Today (Dec. 16), the northern capital officially joined 52 other communities in the province already on the network and is one of 160 across Canada that Rogers says it intends to reach the week before Christmas.

“The City of Prince George is pleased to welcome Rogers Communications’ 5G Network to Prince George,” said Mayor Lyn Hall in a news release.

“Having access to the latest communications technology and real-time data will have many benefits for residents and businesses in our community. 5G technology also promises to generate many exciting new opportunities for improvements in public safety, transportation, online government services, and more.”

For those who are unfamiliar, 5G aims to provide increased speed and capacity for internet and cellphone data, more efficient use of spectrum and lower latency, and ‘instantaneous access’ for applications.

Rogers B.C. Region President Rick Sellers says this could be of special use for northern industries and sectors.

“5G is now available to even more customers and businesses across British Columbia, bringing the future of innovation to our own backyards,” he explained.

“By enabling the digitalization of entire industries, this transformational technology will support new economies and endless opportunities that will drive prosperity for our province and Canada.”

Rogers also announced today its first 5G standalone rollout in core Canadians cities, including Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal.

According to the company, more than 2.2 million Canadians are currently using its 5G Infinite unlimited data plans, and it also hopes to bring 250,000 jobs to the country’s economy by 2026 in what is expected to provide $40 billion to the economy via 5G networks.

Earlier this month, Shaw Mobile opened a retail shop in Prince George’s Pine Centre Mall as a way to expand its LTE and fibre networks in the north.

TELUS announced in June 2019 its plan to expand its 5G service to Prince George by early 2022.
