Prince George election 2018: Dave Fuller has been thinking about running for council for 25 years

On Oct. 20, Prince George residents will pick one mayor, eight councillors and seven school trustees. The ballot will have two mayoral candidates, 13 councillor candidates and 11 school trustee candidates. There are also 15 candidates running in the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George.

PrinceGeorgeMatters has sent out a list of questions to those vying for a seat in public office.

Reason community would recognize your name: I founded the store Ave Maria in 1988 and ran it until 2017 when I sold it to my partner. I was the founding member and president of PACHA the Peoples Action Committee for Healthy Air, which worked to get a positive improvement in the air quality – 60 per cent reduction in odour and 40 per cent reduction in particulate. I have been involved in organizations such as Pisces swim club, Spruce Credit Union board, Northern Uganda Development Foundation board, Brothers soup bus board. Currently, I volunteer with the SVP sandwich line and coach high school basketball.

What is the most important issue facing Prince George, and how do you propose to deal with it?

The disconnect between city spending and the ongoing ability of taxpayers to continue to finance.

How should Prince George address the issue of crime in the city?

Increase patrols in the downtown core and communicate reasons to business owners why they are not responding to certain types of calls.

What is your specific reason for running?

This is something I have been thinking of for 25 years but the time has never been right. Now, with my current business schedule, I have the time to be of service to the people of Prince George.

Where can the city spend less?

Transportation costs have risen 25 per cent in the last year alone, according to the city’s financial statements. We need to provide better service at a lower cost.

Where should the city be investing more?

In its citizens and groups that are promoting Prince George to bring in participants for events. Last year, the city spent $21,000 of a $185-million budget in this area.

What new business or feature would you like to see in Prince George?

An angel investment fund.
