A ‘committee to establish a committee.’

That’s the process in play for the City of Prince George as it aims to create a team of local officials that will ultimately select the volunteer hosts for the 2022 BC Summer Games, which were awarded to the northern capital in March 2017.

Members of the public will be chosen by the selection committee for the board of directors, who are set to facilitate the four-day event in less than 20 months.

During Monday night’s (Dec. 7) meeting, Acting City Manager Walter Babicz brought forward recommendations to Mayor Lyn Hall and councillors, written by Community Services Director Adam Davey, that the nomination committee would be established and its terms of reference would be approved.

Both were carried unanimously, and the selection committee is scheduled to present its candidates for the BC Summer Games board by April 12, 2021.

So, who’s picking the hosts?

The nomination committee will consist of eight people, including Mayor Hall, Babicz and Davey, as well as Brad Beckett, Senior Manager of the Prince George Events Group.

Council is now looking to add four more members, one that will represent each of the following organizations before its first meeting in January:

  • Lheidli T’enneh First Nation
  • Engage Sport North
  • School District 57 (SD57)
  • Tourism Prince George

When asked by Coun. Brian Skakun if there’ll be any financial commitments, Babicz explained no costs will be needed as it's similar to the process when a nomination committee was chosen ahead of the 2015 Canada Winter Games.

Who can become a volunteer host-committee director?

There will be 16 volunteer directors on the board for the Prince George 2022 BC Summer Games.

The nomination selection committee will be picking individuals from the public to serve, organize and oversee the games, which are schedule to take place July 21 to 24, 2022

It’s set to bring in roughly 3,500 athletes, coaches and spectators across various sports.

An official list has not been finalized, but past summer games have included track-and-field, basketball, soccer, lacrosse, swimming, golf, canoeing, triathlon, wrestling and volleyball.

The Maple Ridge 2020 BC Summer Games were cancelled as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This will be the first time since 1990 that Prince George will host B.C.’s best young summer athletes and the third provincial games since 1981 when it welcomed the winter edition.
