The message is repeated each year, but it appears some residents simply aren’t understanding.

Prince George RCMP has released stats from its annual holiday CounterAttack campaign, which targets impaired drivers by setting up static check-points in certain areas of the city and roving patrols.

Together with the Municipal Traffic Services Section and the North District RCMP’s Traffic Services Section, 34 impaired drivers were caught between Dec. 6, 2019 and Jan. 1, 2020, resulting in 58 vehicle impoundments.

The numbers are as follows:

  • 34 - Impaired drivers
    • One criminal code impaired driving (alcohol)
    • One criminal code impaired driving (drugs)
    • 14 - 90-day immediate roadside prohibition (IRP) with 30-day vehicle impoundment (over 100 mg per cent)
    • 18 - Three-day IRP with seven-day vehicle impoundment (between 60-99 mg per cent)
  • 19 - Other suspensions
    • 10 - 24-hour suspensions for alcohol (between 50-59 mg per cent)
    • 8 - 24-hour suspension for drugs
    • 1 - 12-hour suspension for a learner or new driver with alcohol in the body
  • 16 - Prohibited / Suspended drivers apprehended

"We ask the members of our community to remain focused when on our roads this winter, and to exercise good judgement," says Prince George RCMP Cpl. Craig Douglass in a statement.

"We will continue to focus on those drivers that do the most harm in our community."

On the other side, Mounties are also thanking those public members who didn’t drive under the influence and encouraged safer habits, and for their patience during the campaign.

Traffic Services Section team members will continue to enforce action at high-collision intersections, targeting impaired, prohibited and suspended drivers.
