Two more months.

That’s how much longer Prince George pop-culture fans will have to tentatively wait for Northern FanCon to take place in 2020 as current COVID-19 restrictions have been altered and maintained in B.C.

The new dates are set for Nov. 25 to 27, which marks the second time Founding Director Norm Coyne has announced a postponement to the sixth annual event.

On March 17, Coyne originally rescheduled the convention by six months to Sept. 25 to 27, which also would’ve touted the one-year anniversary of local residents crowdfunding more than $100,000 to bring Northern FanCon back.

He says the Canada-U.S. border closure and crowd restrictions of 50 people or less would ‘make it near impossible’ for the three-day event to go through for guests and fans.

“The safety and happiness of all our attendees is paramount to any of our decisions regarding our plans for this event,” says Coyne in a statement.

“We worked unbelievably hard to save FanCon in 2019 and with your support, we were able to do the impossible and had big plans for FanCon 2020. We realize this has been a complicated time for everyone and we cannot tell you how much it means for you all to stand by us while we adapt to make sure Northern FanCon continues to be strong for many years to come.”

The Department of Homeland Security in the U.S. confirmed on social media today (July 16) Canada's border will now be formally closed until Aug. 21.

B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry has also encouraged for many months to stay out of large gatherings, continuing the cancellation or postponement of events with 50 people or more.

“These are indeed unprecedented times,” adds Coyne.

“We are thankful for the support we have received from all of you. This has been a truly challenging time for us all but we are so grateful to know the event will still go ahead thanks to the foundation you have provided us with.”

Northern FanCon is also planning to unveil a ‘brand new element’ in August set to allow fans to interact with guests, vendors and artists.

Organizers are also set to host a second virtual convention over the first rescheduled weekend of Sept. 25-27.

Prior to the pandemic, Northern FanCon was scheduled for May 8 to 10.

Celebrity guest announcements included Tara Reid, Mike Colter (Luke Cage), Summer Glau and Marc Bernardin (Castle Rock).
