A second separate COVID-19 outbreak involving the LNG Canada Project Site in northern B.C. has been declared over.

Northern Health says the surge of infections among Diversified Transportation staff at the $40-billion Kitimat project has ended today (Jan. 11) as no new cases have been detected since its last one was found nearly a month ago.

The outbreak was first declared on Dec. 17 by medical health officers.

Since then, all 16 employees that tested positive for the virus have recovered and no longer require isolation as well as any close contacts.

On Christmas Day (Dec. 25), the project site's first outbreak was declared over after all 56 JGC Fluor contracted employees recovered from COVID-19 and no new cases had been reported since Dec. 2.

Three outbreaks have ended since the pandemic reached the region in March 2020.

The one placed at the North Peace Seniors Housing Society apartments in Fort St. John was also declared over on Christmas as its 15 cases had fully recovered and one resident passed away in November.

There are currently four other outbreaks on Northern Health's watch.

As of this publication, 12 people have died and 60 lab-confirmed cases are in Prince George's Jubilee Lodge with the long-term care home seeing 48 residents infected and 12 staff members.

Two COVID-19 outbreaks are in University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC), including the Internal Medicine Unit where one person has died among 21 total infections, broken down to 10 patients and 11 staff members.

The other is in the Rehabilitation Unit where one case has been detected since Jan. 5.

At Coastal GasLink's work accommodation sites in Burns Lake and the Nechako region, there are no active cases among 56 cases discovered to date involving the 7 Mile and Little Rock Lake lodges.

Since the start of the pandemic, Northern Health has found a total of 2,387 COVID-19 infections, which has resulted in 37 deaths per the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC).

This also includes 20 people in critical care, 42 total hospitalizations and 1,904 recoveries.

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry is set to update B.C.'s COVID-19 situation at 3 p.m. this afternoon (Jan. 11).
