It'll be a snowy start to the new year, which is courting potential heavy dumps in northern B.C.

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Highway 97 north of Prince George, causing hazardous conditions for commuters, as well as a winter storm warning for inland sections of the North Coast.

This includes Kitimat and Terrace as a frontal system is approaching and may continue to move east towards the interior, according to the latest radar reading.

Right now, up to 20 cm of snow is expected for the Pine Pass tonight (Dec. 31) and into Friday (Jan. 1).

Snowfall is expected to become heavy in the region by 2021's first dawn.

Environment Canada says the snow is likely to continue into Friday night as well, so anyone that needs to travel is being asked to adjust their driving habits and be prepared for changing conditions.

As for the North Coast, the winter storm warning is set to bring in 25 cm of fresh, heavy snow by tomorrow morning.

This will cause roads to be difficult to maneuver, especially when visibility is reduced, and drivers are encouraged to avoid travel if they can.
