The sound of squeaky shoes on the hardwood and buzzers are back this weekend.

Both the men's and women's UNBC Timberwolves basketball programs kick off their seasons, matching up against the Mount Royal Cougars in Calgary.

The women tip off at 5 p.m. while the men will start at 7 p.m. today (Oct. 26). Saturday (Oct. 27) the women will tip off at 3 p.m. while the men get underway at 5 p.m.

Here's a recap of the 2017-18 season for both the men and women.

Women

  • Finished with a 9-11 record
  • Finished 10th in Canada West standings
  • 69.8 points scored per game
  • 71.5 points allowed per game
  • Scoring leader (returning player): Vasiliki Louka (18.2 per game)
  • Rebounding leader: Vasiliki Louka (12.2 per game)
  • Assists leader (returning player): Madison Landry (3.1 per game)
  • Steals leader (returning player): Maria Mongomo (3.1 per game)
  • Blocks leader: Vasiliki Louka (1.1 per game)

A player you'll want to keep your eyes on is fourth-year guard/forward Maria Mongomo, who last season averaged 18.1 PPG, 8.3 RPG, 2.0 APG and 3.1 SPG. The Spanish native was in the top five of Canada West last season in points per game and steals per game. She also was top 10 in rebounds per game.

“I definitely think this is going to be a big year for us," UNBC guard Emily Holmes said in a press release. "We have some senior players and players who have been playing together for a long time. Our solid preseason showed some of that experience, and as long as we carry that through the season, I think we will be successful."

Men

  • Finished with a 10-10 record
  • Finished 10th in Canda West Standings
  • 80.7 points scored per game
  • 83.7 points allowed per game
  • Scoring leader (returning player): Jovan Leamy (15.1 points per game)
  • Rebounding leader (returning player): Vaggelis Loukas (7.3 per game)
  • Assists leader (returning player): James Agyeman (3.3 per game)
  • Steals leader: Jovan Leamy (1.4 per game)
  • Blocks leader: Vaggelis Loukas (0.5 per game)

For the men, you will want to keep your eyes on Guard Jovan Leamy.

Leamy was the third-highest scorer per 40 minutes in Canada West last season. The Toronto native stands at six-foot-five and will look for success with his other guards James Agyeman and Vova Pluzhnikov.

"Our team this year is so deep," Agyeman says in the release. "We can go one to 10, so we need to play our game, execute, and trust the system. Once we do that, we will be fine.”
