When you’re done with your old mascara wands, do you just throw them away?

Do you know they could have a second life helping wild animals?

Turns out, mascara wands are the perfect tool to remove fly eggs and larva from the fur of wild animals.

The idea started at the Appalachian Wildlife Refuge in the U.S. and has since spread to Canada and around the world.

In Prince George, the Recycling and Environmental Action Planning Society (REAPS) is collecting old mascara wands to mail to Project Wild Wands Canada.

Wild Wands Canada then disinfects the wands and sends them to various wildlife rehabilitation centres across the country.

REAPS works to foster environmental stewardship in the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George (RDFFG) focusing on waste reduction, community outreach, and public awareness.

If you want to reduce waste and give your mascara wands a new life, all you have to do is wash them with soap and water and drop them off in the mailbox at REAPS Compost Demo Garden on 1950 Gorse St.

When REAPS receives enough wands for a box full they will mail it to Project Wild Wands Canada.
