A community’s strength is its people. When each and every person is valued, and their contributions welcomed, it can inspire the belief that anything is possible.

There’s an organization that has been working towards making Prince George a stronger community for more than 60 years.

AiMHi has been providing support and services to people with diverse abilities and their families since 1957. By encouraging and supporting opportunities for people, AiMHi has helped create an inclusive sense of community in the Prince George area.

“We take a person-centered approach,” says Angela Aubichon, a program director with AiMHi, a non-profit that serves approximately 700 people a year.

“We gear our services to what the person needs. By building on people’s strengths, and supporting the development of lasting relationships, others recognize what a person can do and see the value in what they have to contribute.”

AiMHi offers multiple services for children and families, including family support (geared towards helping parents), children’s life skills, infant development and a children’s respite home.

Their infant development program serves 250 people from birth to age three and their families each year. This early intervention makes a difference; it provides parents with confidence, skills and resources to support their child’s development in addition to providing opportunities to meet other families with similar experiences.

AiMHi’s Children’s Respite Home offers a safe place where children can make friends and have fun with knowledgeable, caring employees.

The organization also offers a variety of supports for adults. AiMHi assists people to live independently or in a family home-like environment through the home sharing program. In addition, they operate approximately 40 homes in Prince George with around-the-clock support.

AiMHi’s community-based programs provide people with life and work skills they need to gain meaningful paid employment in the community. Engaging with others in the community and building relationships is important and provides a sense of belonging for people.

By focusing on community inclusion and building relationships, AiMHi helps people stay connected. “It’s the joy of knowing you have people rooting for you and having people to share that excitement with,” says Aubichon.
